Confession time, I have never read a Brian Lumley book. Why, I hear
you all cry. Simple answer...I've always been put off by the thickness
of the 'Necroscope' books.
I just don't seem to have the time to sit and indulge myself these
days. So this book gives a 'taster' of the main characters from
his books. There are 8 stories (some of which have only been published
in the UK). 3 for Titus Crow, a psychic detective who is also a
master magician and destroyer of the Cthulhian gods (busy person).

'Inception' is the very beginning where Titus' finds out about
what life holds for him. In 'Lord Of The Worms', he ends up lying
on a sacrificial altar when a simple secretarial job goes wrong.
Finally, in 'Name And Number', he has to fight 'malevolent, occult
winds' (hurricanes with a twist) that can strip flesh from bones.
I enjoyed these stories.
They had all the characteristics that I like in a novel (must admit
I don't usually read anything with magic in it but here it worked).
Verdict: if I'm stuck for something to read I will keep the Titus
Crow stories in mind. 2 for David Hero and Eldin the Wanderer, agents
for King Kuranes of the Dreamlands.
'The Weird Wines Of Naxas Niss' and 'The Stealer Of Dreams'. Verdict:
If you like fantasy, I'm sure you will enjoy these stories. 3 for
Harry Keogh, Necroscope: vampire killer and able to speak with the
dead. 'Dead Eddy' is a gambler in Las Vegas looking for that one
last big win, problem is he's dead!
The death of an amateur palaeontologist in 'Dinosaur Dreams' shows
Harry that he can rely on others and not just the dead for help.
'Resurrection' deals with his love for his dead mother and the dangers
it can lead to. Verdict: More my style of reading matter. I will
now go and search out a copy of 'Necroscope' and start reading,
I'll just have to find the time!.
This book is a good way of finding out if you like Lumley's style
of writing. Overall, I did so now I have another author to add to
my ever growing list.
