Yoda
to Fight and Sing in next Star Wars movie?
Yoda is set to appear in the two follow up movies to the Phantom
Menace, Episode II and III. And he will appear in some rather surprising
ways, George Lucas commented to movie insiders late last month.
Asked about Yoda's role in Episode II, Lucas said, "Actually, I
was just discussing this with Frank Oz <Yoda's puppeteer>
about four days ago, right before I came to France. And <Yoda>
will definitely get a chance to move around and fight in one of
the next two films. ... Yoda will show why he's called the Master."
He went on: "Yoda may also have a song to sing during Episode II.
Zen masters often hummed musical koans as they taught their temple
students to fight and learn. This is a tradition that has carried
on into our own boot camps, in all those movie scenes where platoons
are marching and singing. I'd like to see the <Yoda> song
have a tribal African influence, organic but full of energy and
menace."
The news that Yoda's musical turn may end up like French Foreign
Legion throat singing won't surprise anyone, after all, our George
based the battle droids in Episode One on African war masks and
sculpture, and the trade federation tanks on the African bull elephant.
Let's just hope that he doesn’t make the entire second movie a
musical. We could just about put up with Jar Jar Binks talking in
his phoney accent - the thought of the frog-faced miracle of CGI
going all Julie Andrews on us is more than we can bear!
