No Noah's Ark 01/10/2006 . Source: Geoff Willmetts
Flash Fiction ... Forget about global warming as there's a greater alternative coming. Alternative is the right word. I've been there and there's no getting away from it. The end of the world is nigh!
No. Seriously. Forget about global warming as there's a greater alternative coming. Alternative is the right word. I've been there and there's no getting away from it.
I found the way to alternative versions of the Earth. Some are very much like our own. Some further along. Global warming already killing them as the atmosphere is falling apart. A step into the next portal and a Roman Empire is still flourishing. Another and we live under a communist flag. Another and mammals hadn't evolved but reptilians had and actually preferred their own version of global warming cos it made their Earth warm for them all the time. What's bad for one species is better for another. Thing is, even they aren't going to survive what's happening. Well, not unless you're a fish and maybe not even then.
I stepped through the next portal and wasn't breathing air but water. Surprise. Shock. Luck. Whatever. I couldn't stay there without drowning. I stepped back and came out where I'd left with the water coming with me. Not just a trickle. Gallons of the stuff. It had breached the gap. I hastily jumped back further, stepping across the portals wanting to get home. The torrent of water was not very far behind.
Coming home again, I felt safe. My nerve returned and after a week, I stepping through again. So far so good. The alternative Roman Empire was still flourishing. I almost drowned in the reptilian world. I pulled back just in time.
The water was tidal waving through the portals and they were acting as an open drain. No doubt further down the line of portals, after killing off all land life, the water just drained into the next alternative Earth portal, taking more water each time with quicker results.
What can I do? Even pointing out and proving the portals exist wouldn't help. The entire Earth population could migrate in the portals in the opposite direction. We could get others to join us as we attempted to escape but for how long? The water was getting faster and faster. With no Noah's ark, we would only be delaying the inevitable. Better to go quickly then die in fear.
So here I am, wet and smelly holding my placard up. It's only one portal away now.
The end of the world is nigh! Read it and weep but tears won't really help. They would be just more water.
Who would believe me? The only time that will happen is when the water passes through the portal and then it would be too late. I stand here a prisoner of my discovery, unwilling to go on. A meaningless message for this fateful day as the portal opens up and we...
