Timothy Zahn, most famous for his 'Thrawn' series of 'Star Wars' tie-in novels, began a new original series of books with 'Night Train To Rigel'. The first novel introduced the world of the Quadrail, a train-like transportation system between the stars and planets of the galaxy, organised by the mysterious Spiders.
In that first book, former government agent Frank Compton became embroiled in a conspiracy to take over the galaxy. Aided by Bayta, a half-breed that works for the secret species that runs the Quadrail system, Frank learned of the threat posed to the galaxy by the parasitic group mind Modhri. They control many of the rich and famous in worlds all across the galaxy with his coral polyp brain growths.
Having defeated a major arm of the Modhri's mind in book one, Frank and Bayta return to action in 'The Third Lynx'. They witness a murder that leads them to a group of artefacts, all of which have been stolen from collectors and museums in numerous worlds that link back to the Modhri.
Dogged by Morse, a Special Agent with a particular dislike to Compton's methods, Frank and Bayta must uncover the significance of the objects and prevent the final one, the eponymous third Lynx, from falling into their enemy's hands.
I thought this was a stronger book than the first in the series, with a cracking pace and a plot that zips along nicely. The addition of Agent Morse to proceedings really brings things to life, with the reader never sure if Morse is under the Modhri's control or just suspicious of Compton.
The other new characters, young socialites Penny and Daniel, aren't quite as dynamic additions but do present a number of neat emotional plot twists. Zahn is an accomplished writer who tends to tinker within his created world. The more he tinkers, the more fun it becomes. 'The Third Lynx' is a fun read for a cloudy day.
