This is the third book in 'The Last Legion' series. Whilst it could be read as a stand-alone book it would be far more enjoyable to read the two earlier books as the stories not only use the same background but many of the characters are common to all of them. Knowing what happened in the earlier books will explain and enrich the story for you.
This is a military SF book packed with action. The Last Legion are a military force defending an outpost planetary system on the edge of a human stellar empire. In the first book, when several of the characters arrive as fresh recruits, their empire is crumbling and the Legion are left alone in Book 1 to overcome a large scale local uprising and in Book 2 to defeat an alien invasion.
In this book, they have to deal with humans in the neighbouring Larix/Kura systems which are run by a dictatorship with designs on the Cumbre system which the Legion are defending. Fresh from their triumph over the aliens and now having the benefit of alien technology and even alien mercenaries, the Legion decide to deal with this enemy which has been hostile from the start and crush them once and for all. The disparate elements of Cumbre's population which had been hostile to each other are now rallying to fight this new threat.
As I saw the book is full of detail with spies, ground warfare, space battles all rattling along at a cracking pace. I won't ruin the book by giving away the details of the story but if you like military SF you will enjoy Chris Bunch's writing. As well as rich characterisation, he brings the whole of Cumbre and its problems to life and the action is non-stop until our heroes and heroines triumph over their latest enemies.
Thoroughly recommended.
