There's a lot of arguments as to should we listen to a soundtrack having seen the source it was intended to underlay or treat purely as an orchestral piece of music to see if it has legs. Often as not, both ways can work because at the end of the day, you're paying more attention to the music.
Reading the extensive sleeve notes from composer Robert J, Kral, a veteran from the 'Angel' TV series, he was specifically asked to avoid using the traditional themes from the 'Superman' films. Although I wouldn't call any of this album's music catchy and as a piece of orchestral music that lasts nearly an hour it is pleasing background music. In many respects, music for drama animation shouldn't be that imposing otherwise it can flood the dialogue and at the same time there is a need to supplement the action. As such, you wouldn't really have musical cues that jar to the ear.
The continuous nature of the music for animation compared to live film is mostly because the composer works from the completed film rather than any last minute decisions to reduce the length. As such, the flow between the twenty-six tracks here gives a more continuous feel to the recording.
If you enjoyed the 'Superman: Doomsday' TV animation special released on 20 , then you might enjoy the music that accompanied it. If you just like owning soundtrack music then although not designed to be overall catchy, I do think it will grow with repeated plays.
