A little story first. Early in the year, I wrote an obituary for New X-Men artist Dave Cockrum. Shortly after, I had a request for copies of the cover design originals that I bought back in the 70s for the magazine 'Alter Ego' having a Cockrum Special, out in 2008. As it turned out, another editor at TwoMorrows, Bob McLeod, liked and wanted to use them as well, the result being some of them appearing in the latest edition of 'Rough Stuff' which came out first.
The title has nothing to do with being duffed up but the initial designs and sketches comicbook artists do before finalising their pages. Page layouts are important to ensure cohesive plot telling and its far easier to correct a rough than do extensive detailed panels and having to change them. If anything, 'Rough Stuff' is an opportunity to see the working mind of the comicbook artist as they put their designs together. How they do it varies from artist to artist. Even when it gets to the tight pencils before an inker is let loose on them shows a how an artist's work actually looks. If you thought that the main requirement was just to draw well then I think this mag will be an eye-opener. You have to be capable of drawing more than characters in long johns fighting it out but buildings and real people in realistic situations as well, doing it to order on a regular basis combined with different viewpoints to express the mood of the situation.
This magazine shows and explains how this is done with comments from McLeod and the various artists. This issue includes Brian Stelfreeze, Butch Guice, Ian Churchill, Colleen Doran and Frank Brunner as well as a look at Dave Cockum's cover and character designwork he did at Marvel.
If you've got any interest in comicbook design as an amateur wanting to break into the business or just fascinated by seeing how its done then this magazine is going to appeal to you.
