If there was a successor to 'The X-Files' then Warner Bros TV series 'Supernatural' must surely be a contender. Dark, moody, touches of humour to off-set the horrific values and not to mention including directors David Nutter and Kim Manners who learnt a thing or two from the other series. Creator Eric Kripke wanted an urban horror show and from what he said it only came about when a previous idea was rejected until he suggested having a pair of brothers on the Route 66 road hunting down demons and whathaveyou. That kinda worked out, providing a vehicle (or in this case a 1967 Chevrolet Impala) for actors Jensen Eckles and Jared Padalecki as they were the only two in the line-up for leads, Dean and Sam Winchester. There's a side reference here that the plot-line involving Eckles in 'Smallville' was cut short to ensure the transition that I didn't know about.

Titan Books run of these companion books is growing. They follow similar patterns of behind-the-scenes interviews with crew and cast and episode guides for each season with other info along the way. Looking over the music playlist from the episodes, I hope someone is considering releasing a double CD (not cassette tape!!) of the tracks in full as its quite a healthy selection. The info fills in a lot of background. After the pilot, the production moved to Vancouver and I was surprised how much was filmed on stage than outside.

If I have to be picky about anything with this book, it's a shame that re-occurring characters were listed separately instead of with the particular episodes, especially as they only seldomly appeared. I thought for a moment that actress Nicki Aycox had been missed off the credits on an actor-lite second episode. Likewise, it was also a shame that neither her or Samantha Smith (who played Mary Winchester) didn't get a decent photo each of themselves instead of appearing in the shadows, especially as they were both interviewed.

The colour photo section obviously features the two leads extensively but there are some spreads of the sets and staging effects. I hope with the next book there will be more of the creatures and other cast involved especially as the second season is balancing the books and introducing some regular female cast.

If you like 'Supernatural' the series then you should already be ordering this book up anyway without me telling you to do so. It'll certainly be an asset as you watch the series again or taking a road trip across America.
