The third volume of collected interviews from production and cast of 'Doctor Who' from the 1980s should speak for itself. Considering that the original magazines may not be available or even in this country should help you make up your mind to own a copy of this book. It contains interviews with three former Doctors, Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker although oddly enough not Sylvester McCoy. There are interviews with four companions, Matthew Waterhouse, Nicola Bryant, Bonnie Langford and Sophie Aldred. The remaining interviews work their way through from scriptwriters and editors to special effects and management. The topics covered include an insight into their backgrounds and where they are today. If you've ever thought of getting work in the television industry, this should be of use as to what degree to pursue. Although much of the work the BBC does now is farmed out to smaller companies, I imagine the criteria for education hasn't changed that much. As with the previous books in this series, it also gives a snapshot of what was going on around the BBC at the time and up to the time when 'Doctor Who' was cancelled in 1989 which is always useful for historical value.

These 'Talkback' volumes have all been informative. I'd started watching the three volume DVD 'New Beginnings' when I started the book and it touched on various things from the extras that gave extra detail. No doubt you'll probably get the same effect if you do this with other DVDs from the same time period.

If you're a 'Doctor Who' fan who likes to explore the earlier series then this book will definitely be an asset in your collection. The information about how the effects were achieved on low budget and yet were the first experiments, even back in the 80s, give food for thought as to what would have happened had it been a bigger budget and even more enthusiasm like it is today. There's enough here to keep your attention and make you better informed on the subject. An interesting read.
