Greatest Uncommon Denominator (GUD) # 1 - August 2007 01/09/2007 . Source: Rod MacDonald
pub: GUD. 212 pages bi-annual magazine. Print: $10.00 (US), pdf download: $ 3.50. check out www.gudmagazine.com
I received an advance copy of a new magazine called 'Greatest Uncommon Denominator' which is obviously a play on the phrase, the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately, the Adobe 8.1 on my computer found the PDF difficult to handle and kept cutting out at the most inopportune times, usually when I was just getting into the stories. However, I've hopefully seen enough to form an opinion.
This is a very difficult magazine to categorise, something, I think, the editors strived to achieve. They don't want to be put in a pigeonhole. You see, once defined, they would become constrained, which is not what they are about. In saying that, what actually are they about?
'We are GUD. Greatest Uncommon Denominator. What you've been looking for in a magazine. Published two times a year, we provoke with words and art. We bring you stories that engage. Essays and interviews that make you think harder. Poetry that bares reality, more subtly interprets what it means to be human. Literature for the genre folks, and genre for the lit folks.'
This is what they say about themselves. If you're looking for a magazine full of Science Fiction, then don't look here. You will find some, but there are other genres. It's a mixed bag and I am pleased to say, on inspection of the contents, one can go further to say it's a mixed bag of goodies. In two hundred plus pages, I counted eighteen short stories, ten examples of art and a host of poems.
SFCrowsnest is essentially a Science Fiction magazine. GUD is probably on the borderline as far as SFCrowsnest's remit is concerned but I like magazine and enjoyed reading it. I think it is refreshing and innovative. Should you wish to find out more then I would urge you to look at their website.
