The companion pieces (four in all) are joined by one who I confess I could not remember from the original shows. Liz Shaw was a companion to Jon Pertwee's Doctor in 1970. A Scully to his Mulder, she was quickly converted on meeting the Autons. After a few adventures, Liz left with no fanfares or farewells. This story is placed around the time of her departure and makes a little gesture towards why she departed.
After arranging to meet a friend in Cambridge, Liz travels to her house to discover ghastly carnage. Her friend is missing. The Doctor pitches up pretty quickly, on the trail of missing scientists but, despite initial appearances, its not just scientists who are misplaced and the trail leads to a dentist. Reluctantly, Liz makes an appointment which she later wishes she hadn't kept!
Pretty soon the Doctor and Liz are knee-deep in Cybermen and yet another alien invasion but something about this one is a little different.
Caroline John has an excellent voice for this story. She manages to convey the drama with little intervention. The only guest voice is that of Nicholas Briggs. There is enough of a story to make the lack of Jon Pertwee be less important and it is still possible to conjure up his presence at the edge of the production.
Overall, this story works well within its remit and there are hints of the character of the Doctor as developed in the recent TV resurrection. Its worth an hour of your time and could be the start of a beautiful friendship for Liz and UNIT all over again. I'm looking forward to how someone somewhere is going to tie up the benign relationship of the Doctor with UNIT and the antagonism of Torchwood. An interesting conundrum.
