There is nothing wrong with your eyes or monitor come to that. GNP Crescendo has branched out into books with a re-release of 'The Outer Limits Companion'. For those of you who have the 1986 edition and have it either well-worn and know the poor quality of the paper and photos, then you really want to own this version. It's bigger, updated and full of decent black and white photos from the original 1960s two season series which, at the time, was the only US rival to 'The Twilight Zone'. Does it justify the price? Hell, yes.
I procured a copy of the original last year and that was expensive enough. With the release of 'The Outer Limits' on DVD, this is the kind of book you want to own. The copyright date inside shows this book was re-issued in 1998 but as we were handed a copy to review, I have a suspicion it was to remind people that this book is still out there and in many respects it really is a first edition.
Not only does it contain an episode guide but it looks behind the scenes at how the series was created by Leslie Stevens and Joseph Stefano, not to mention looking at the scoring by Dominic Frontiere and the effects on an ever decreasing budget on the Projects Unlimited crew. Did I mention the interviews with the actors involved, including Robert Cult, William Shatner and Martin Landau? That's only tipping the iceberg. Writer David Schow really did a top notch job here.
I'm near the end of watching the second season of the DVD boxset of 'The Outer Limits' myself and found it an asset to filling in the gaps explaining the cost cuts and the more courtroom-like scenes as the second bunch of producers were transferred across from 'Perry Mason'. What is interesting is that although the second lot weren't knowledgeable in Science Fiction, they still managed to generate some classic episodes as well like 'The Demon With A Glass Hand'.
The control voice would order you to buy this book if it could. As it can't right now, you'll have to settle for me to tell you that this one should be on your shopping list.
