There is great joy in being a reviewer. You see a lot of new books. Many of which you can rejoice in reading and with 'Modesty Blaise' it becomes a passion that can be savoured and passing the word that the latest release from Titan Books has come out. It's also, if you'll excuse the pun, virgin territory for Titan as they have now exceeded the run they had with the Princess back in the late 80s/early 90s with chronicling her adventures.
The newspaper strips of 'Modesty Blaise' also mark the one and only distinguished female heroine that is equal to that Bond chap and need I remind you that the Miramax film 'My Name Is Modesty', something we've reviewed a couple times, is also being promoted at the same time as this book, so make sure you get both or send to a loved one who appreciates good stories.
'Modesty Blaise: Cry Wolf' features three stories. 'Take Me To Your Leader...' is probably the closest we have to a real SF story when a story unfolds of a possible close encounter happens out in the Pacific and Tarrant accompanies Modesty and Willie to the rich millionaire and his guests, including a prominent professor to see what is going on.
'Highland Witch' has Modesty rescuing a tied up woman, Peggy Wallace, thrown into the river in Scotland and the discovery of her wealthy uncle being held captive by Sister Binks. Modesty and Willie come to the rescue hindered by his own personal recognition.
The same could be said of the title story, 'Cry Wolf'. Tarrant wants the pair to bring in a genius chap their know from Lapland to decipher a new Russian code much to their reluctance. It turns out that the KGB are planning to kidnap the man and his wife so Modesty and Willie rush to the rescue.
I am really trying to tell you these stories without giving too much away and spoil the surprises because there are really superb from 1974 that will brighten up your December days. Romero's art is sharp and there are some character sketches which shows how much has to be reduced to fit into the smaller newspaper size.
There is also part of a Peter O'Donnell interview from that time conducted by Richard Burton (not the actor but the then editor of Comic Media News) and Nick Landau (he of Titan Books) from the time period) covering the writer's thoughts on the 1966 film and his re-acquisition of the rights. I hope next time that we come up to date with having O'Donnell commenting on the Miramax film.
Whatever. Don't miss out on this book if you want to see Titan going strong with the rest of these stories. 'Modesty Blaise' has always been a firm favourite with us old SF fans and this is a good reason for you young 'uns to find out why.
