I can show my age with this book as I own an original first edition and this is the third edition with 20 years between each of these two. 'The Starfleet Technical Manual' only covers the original TV series but covers mostly through diagrams and illustrations a working bible of the original 'Star Trek'.
In some respects, especially where the technology is concerned some pictures can look, how shall we say, primitive as with the tricorder which has a transistor looking circuit board but then again, silicon technology was only being developed at the time let alone thought of for the future. Then again, who would have thought that poker chips would contain data files back then. Saying that, those ladies who would like to put together their original uniforms, the layouts have the necessary measurements for decent do-it-yourself jobs. For the men, you'll have to make do with ready-mades or improvise with jumpers and trousers.
The book is really a guide to the Federation as was known in the original 'Star Trek' series covering the known stars, starships - there's even a reference to some vessel called Enterprise - and everything Starfleet. You will only find reference to Klingons and Romulans in passing as at that time, Starfleet had barely penetrated their space. Anyway, you might prefer to make your own 3-D chess set which is shown here as well, including a simplified instruction to play.
If you're of a certain age, like myself, then you may already own a copy of this book. If you're a younger Trek fan then this is certainly the right time to get your own copy. As much as I like to see some books reproduced, with so much colour reference given, I hope some consideration is given to the next edition and have it in actual colour if for no other reason than every Trek fan would be after it. This book was very much treated as a Star Trek bible in its time and still holds pretty much today.
