Yeah! I know. It doesn't seem like a lot of pages for the money if you read the info above. I doubt if the pictures included with this review will do the book justice either. This is quite a heavy book with its plastic padded cover (the picture is correct not the red one available elsewhere on the Net) and practically cardboard thick pages. It is also the last will and testament of Abelard Van Helsing as he tells you something about himself and why he bequeathing all his hand-written knowledge and pictures so that you might continue his job of ridding the world of demons, ghouls, vampires and werewolves. It's a tough job and he hopes you're up to it or willing to make this a Yuletide gift to someone who is.
Artist Mile Teves is a Hollywood conceptual artist and reading his credentials on 'Interview With A Vampire', 'Blade' and 'Van Helsing' (that name comes up a lot, doesn't it?), doesn't take much to realise the influences on this book. Teves is very much a fine arts artist and this reflects in the work on these pages. Dotted throughout the book are little postcard openers with either more text or illustrations. There are also two sealed packets which I don't want to open in case it unleashes demons that I haven't got a stake or necessary armaments to take on although I could probably talk them to death.
This is a rather unusual book that left on a coffee table or coffin table if that is your want or taste for your friends to gulp at as you prepare to go out on your nightly patrol. The text by Van Helsing is informed and sure to be a talking point as you stake your first vampire of the night. Don't forget the candle to gaze lovingly at the pictures to assist the moonlight and keep demons from hiding in dark corners. An unusual book of the night.
