I read the original, 'Rendevous With Rama' by Arthur C. Clarke, many, many years ago. It was an excellent story. This sequel is, in my opinion, just as good a story.
Seventy years after Rama, a vast mysterious alien spacecraft had swept through our Solar System, another similar ship is plotted approaching. The intervening period has not been kind to humanity as there has been something of a mini-Dark Age with most of those 70 years suffering a catastrophic economic decline with wars, social and political problems on a scale to match. It is only just prior to the latest alien spaceship's arrival that mankind are back in space.
An expedition is cobbled together to land on the alien craft and we become aware how little the first expedition discovered. Even before they land the expedition members are at loggerheads. Between the military and the civilians. Between those who believe this is an identical craft to the first and those who think it isn't and lots of bickering over which actions should take priority. Much is discovered but this tends to lead to greater mysteries.
This is a good old-fashioned adventure story with plenty of twists and turns and threats from fellow humans as well as aliens. At the end, we are left with a cliff-hanger as the alien ship finally heads out of the Solar System.
If you enjoyed 'Rendezvous With Rama', you will enjoy this. If you have not read, read it first. This is an excellent story. Well recommended.
