The reason the softcover edition of this Alex Ross book is here instead of in our normal conversion listing is because there is an additional 32 pages of material taken from the forthcoming series he's been working on called 'Justice'. As such, if you missed this book in its hardback edition, you have an extra bonus with this edition. With the lower price, if you do have the hardback, you'll probably give this book at least a look simply because it is Alex Ross - water-colour painter and inker extraordinaire.

After reading the hardback last year, I ended up making some effort to locating some of the bound editions of some of some of the works shown in this book. Although I think Alex Ross doesn't always gets the writers he deserves, there is no denying his photo-realism technique is a refreshing and even more remarkable considering he prefers water colour for his medium.

Considering the work inside, I'm rather surprised that such a red picture of Superman was selected for the cover but no doubt the new film just around the corner probably influenced this choice. It hardly reflects the quality of the artwork inside,

For neo-artists wanting to get into the comicbook business, there have been several significant artists one should pay attention to and of these only Alex Ross has been given such attention as this. You might not want to totally emulate his style but showing how Ross' art has developed from his childhood until now should give pause for thought that all art techniques take time to develop and mature. As this book shows he's as good with pencils as he is with paint, one can only hope some publisher out there will take it into their heads to ensure one of Ross' own heroes, Andrew Loomis' art technique books get a UK release sometime in the future.

If you still want to be gobsmacked in the dark and dull winter nights, then this book will make the time pass a lot faster and is a welcome edition to anyone who likes great artwork.
